Symmetry is an easy principle to visually demonstrate. But how do you effectively apply this principle in your designs? When is the answer symmetry over asymmetry? Symmetry has long been considered an attractive quality when designing. Studies have shown that consumers prefer asymmetrical designs if it matches the brand. For example, a brand wanting to represent excitement and innovation, such as MTV or Apple, can successfully utilize an asymmetrical logo. Although other brands such as McDonald’s and Mercedes may choose to use symmetrical logos to represent tradition.
